Correction: easiest $50 I ever made... Hello, my name is Mitchell. And for those who may not know me, I am Lawrence’s younger brother. And together we make up the team known simply as “Taibros.” First of all, I’d like to thank you all for coming. You know today is a very special day for our family. Not only is it the day Law & Maz get married, but it is also my birthday. Sometimes people ask me, “Mitchell, don’t you feel shortchanged that your very own birthday is overshadowed by your older brother?” I usually tell them, “You know, you’re absolutely right! I totally got shafted!” But really I think it does work out for the better. Lawrence has fewer dates to remember (In fact, their birthdays are only a few days a part you know). Actually I also worked out a deal with Mazie where I’ll be getting 1/3 of all the wedding gifts they receive today. So when I say thank you for coming, I really mean thank you! So where do I begin? Growing up with Lawrence has been an interesting experience. In order to avoid the constant pressure of being compared to one another, we each developed our own unique and sometimes opposite characteristics. Lawrence played the piano, I played the violin. Lawrence went to state school, I went to private. Lawrence has many friends, me.. not so many. But we still live under the same roof and have the same parents. So inevitably we still get compared with one another. My parents are always yelling at me for not being like Lawrence. They’re always telling me: “Mitchell…” Wait, its more like…. “Shang Shang! You’re too lazy, why can’t you be more like Lawrence?” or “Why can’t you have friendslike Lawrence does?” But Lawrence also gets his fair share of scolding. They always tell my brother: “Lawrence your too fat, why can’t you be skinny like Mitchell?” or “Lawrence why can’t you be smartlike Mitchell?” Anyway, enough about just me and Lawrence. I can tell you an interesting anecdote about when Lawrence first started dating Mazie. So we were online and my brother suddenly did the manly thing and told me, “I’m dating someone new.” So I asked him if he had a picture of her. And he showed me this one photo of a bunch of UIUC people having a potluck, there were about 4 boys and 4 girls. So I tried to pick out which one it was, since I have such an intuitive sense of lawrence’s taste in women. “Is it this one?” “no” “Is it this one?” “no” “Is it this one?” “no” “Well it can’t be this one.” “uh ya it is.” But I guess I was totally wrong about Mazie, she is definitely one of the coolest people I know. I mean, how many people do you know have a name that would fit right along with the Amazing Maize Maze? So usually, at these type of weddings, people will usually bring up how the couple’s last names in Chinese combine into a single word meaning something along the lines of Bountiful Harvest, or Beautiful Blossom, or “Our children will be doctors”. Since my Chinese is obviously not good enough to do something like that, I thought that maybe an English version of that would suffice. Although it seems I was beaten to the punch with the party favors, so you can congratulate them on TAI-NG the knot. Another fun fact about last names is that Now that Mazie is part of the Tai family, she’ll have the last name of Tai. Now, in Chinese, its common to address people by their relational title, its where we get all the Uncle and Auntie So-and-So at church. But the interesting thing is, the mandarin word for “Wife” is “Tai Tai”. So the next time you see Mazie, you can formally address her by her proper Chinese title: “TAI TAI TAI”. I guess Lawrence can shorten it to Triple Tai or Tai-Cubed. On a more serious tone, I really admire both Lawrence and Mazie. They really are two awesome people. Not just because they appreciate my sense of humor, but because their authentic and honest in the way they live their life and the way they serve God. It is really a rare thing for two people have such a straight and honest approach to how they lead their life. And for that I give them my deep respect. So out of our earnest respect, would you all join me in raising a toast to our newly wed couple. Lawrence & Mazie: May God watchover you wherever life may lead you. May He guideyou through thick and thin. And may He draw you two closer together, as you both draw closer to Him. Cheers. MONEY. |
